You too can access official site for U2Amy Frazier, STAFF WRITER
Pop goes the world —the World Wide Web, that is —when the first officialU2 Web site hits the Internet today.
From 9 to 10 p.m., the band will give a live interview from the studios ofKROQ in Los Angeles that can be heard on the site with RealAudio. Thecybercast, dubbed "Pop Invasion," will include digital pictures of theinterview.
Although there are more than 1,000 U2-related sites, this is the first toinvolve the band itself. Paul Andersen, 29, of Sausalito, Calif., operates thepopular U2 POP Archive site. He says he’s excited about the new site buthas no plans to discontinue his own.
"A lot of U2’s fans are on the Internet, and it’s excellent they have anofficial site now," Andersen said. "It’s going to get a lot more exposure than the other U2 sites, but I hope they’ll have links to other sites, like mine."
The band’s official site, constructed by the Microsoft Network, will indeedinclude links to some fan sites, as well as constantly updated information, photos, multimedia games and live interviews. The site is free to bothMSN and non-MSN subscribers and will offer bulletin boards and interactive chats.
U2 is on its PopMart tour, and fans can keep track of the band at the site. Daily Pop is an interactive tour map that traces the path of the tour and includes live weather updates and stadium capacity. There’s no word yeton whether it will include ticket availability (the tour comes to the Georgia Dome on Nov. 26). The Pop Fly Cam gives 360-degree tour shots fromthe PopMart stage set, and fans can zoom in or out. There will also be cybercasts of PopMart shows and live chats, as well as video and audioclips from the "Pop" album.
