IRISH rockers U2 were praised by Adi Roche yesterday for all their support of the Chernobyl Children’s Project.
Speaking before the arrival of the first flight of Russian children this summer, the charity’s director said she was “thrilled” with the band’s help.
The Dublin rock legends have donated the proceeds of their smash hit, The Sweetest Thing, to the fund for sick youngsters.
“I know they’re there for us, we were really thrilled to be given the single,” said Ms Roche. “We had never expected they would give us that.”
More than 1,100 children are expected to arrive this summer as part of the Summer Rest and Recuperation Programme organised by Adi Roche and wife of U2’s Bono, Ali Hewson.
The project is “very much a part of Ali’s life,” the former Presidential candidate said.
The project has been running for eight years and has helped up to 6,000 young victims, bringing them to Ireland for short periods where their radiation levels drop by 30 to 50 per cent.
