Ireland Plus: U2 on the Road Again
From Ireland Plus:
U2 ON THE ROAD AGAIN by Geraldine Mc Menamin
This March U2 hit the road again as they embark on another world tour. They continue to be one of the biggest bands in the world, but their last world tour barely broke even.
In a new controversy that erupted yesterday, safety expert Paul Weretimer has claimed that their plans to have standing room only at the front of the stage at the concerts is dangerous. He has accused the band of putting money before safety.
Arthur Fogel, President of U2’s Touring Section hotly denies the claims. He makes the point that to have an all seated show would have meant that more money could have been charged for the tickets and hence more revenue earned. In an interview this morning he stated that the $45 ticket price has made the show more accessible to a greater number and that the band have actually foregone revenue by this approach. With over 20 years experience in the business he is emphatic that all local and statutory safety regulations will be adhered to.
The first six shows for the upcoming U2 Elevation Tour 2001 sold out immediately and a further four shows in the Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia and Toronto were added. The show kicks off in Miami at March 24th.
U2 have a reputation for vast extravaganza. It will be interesting to see what they come up with this time. Will it be a vast Internet terminal or something more mundane? Visit their site at U2.com.
