U2 has once again come out on top, this time garnering the most nominations for the 2002 Orville H. Gibson Guitar Awards. The Irish band was tabbed in the category of best guitar band while the Edge made the cut for best rock guitarist and Adam Clayton for best bassist.
Other multiple nominees include the Dave Matthews Band with two (Dave Matthews–best acoustic guitarist; Stefan Lessard–best bassist) and Radiohead (Jonny Greenwood–best rock guitarist; Colin Greenwood–best bassist). Single nominees spanning the awards’ 10 categories include Nickelback, Blink 182, Linkin Park, R.E.M.’s Peter Buck, Lenny Kravitz, Aerosmith’s Joe Perry, John Mellencamp, Willie Nelson, David Gray, Sheryl Crow, and Nelly Furtado.
Perhaps most eyebrow-raising is the inclusion of Madonna in the category of the Les Paul Horizon Award, which honors the “most promising emerging guitarist.” The pop superstar will compete for the award with pop-rock newcomers Michelle Branch, John Mayer, and Pete Yorn; bluesman Chris Thomas King; and Latin-pop solo artist Juanes.
Winners will be revealed at ceremonies at the Knitting Factory in Los Angeles on February 26. Also to be honored at that time are bluegrass banjo legend Earl Scruggs and legendary Elvis Presley sideman Scotty Moore.
