U2 and Westlife are big winners at Irish Music Awards

U2 won eight awards at the 2002 Meteor Ireland Music Awards.

Westlife won three awards, including Best Irish Pop Act.

The awards are Ireland’s equivalent of the Brits and the Grammys.

They were held at Dublin’s Point Theatre, and hosted by Patrick Kielty.

U2 won awards for Best Irish Rock Band, Best Irish Rock Album for All That You Can’t Leave Behind, Best Irish Live Performance, Best Irish Video for Elevation and Best Irish Rock Single for Walk On.

Bono won Best Irish Songwriter, Edge was named Best Musician and their manager Paul McGuinness received the Industry Award.

Westlife also won Best Irish Pop Album for World Of Our Own and Best Irish Pop Single for their cover version of Billy Joel’s Uptown Girl.

Best Irish Newcomer prize went to Donegal rock group The Revs.

Performers at the awards ceremony included Enrique Iglesias, Westlife, Gabrielle, The Cranberries, Ronan Keating, Lighthouse Family and Muse.
