U2 have begun working on their new album with Rick Rubin, they have revealed.
The Irish rock legends are understood to have commenced recording the follow-up to 2004’s How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb with the super-producer.
Rubin, famed for his work with Slayer, Public Enemy, Run-DMC, and the Beastie Boys, is also credited with resurrecting Johnny Cash’s career, with the series of American Recordings albums.
In a posting on their official website, U2 announced news of the new material and Rubin’s involvement, while also confirming reports of forthcoming work with Green Day. The two bands are expected to get together shortly to record a cover of the Skids’ 1976 track "The Saints Are Coming."
Green Day have been speaking about the initiative, which will benefit the Edge’s Music Rising charity, a fund that seeks to assist musicians who lost their instruments in Hurricane Katrina.
In a posting on their official website, the band commented: "One year later, the devastation is still fresh in our minds, and we’d like to keep it in yours. New Orleans has always been a special city to us, being a hotbed of music and creativity, and it’s hard to believe parts of the Gulf region still remain devastated. We feel that it’s important to continue to raise awareness."
