BONO and THE EDGE were among the sold out Olympia Theatre audience in Dublin, Ireland checking out R.E.M’s latest material on Saturday night (30Jun07). The Losing My Religion band are staging five ‘Working Rehearsals’ at the venue to test new songs ahead of an upcoming album and tour. R.E.M. bassist Mike Mills told the crowd the band chose Dublin for their pre-tour workout because R.E.M. consider the Irish to be "some of the best fans in the world". Walking onstage holding a Guinness, frontman Michael Stipe started the set with new songs Living Wells and Staring Down, admitting some of the new tracks had yet to be performed by the whole group. Other new songs included Mr. Richards, Houston, Man Size Wreath and Till The Day Is Done. R.E.M. wrap up their Dublin residency on Wednesday (04Jul07) and then return to America to complete work on a new album.

U2 rocked Cannes’ famous red carpet, playing to thousands of filmgoers and fans before a late-night screening of their new concert movie, U2 3D.

The band performed a two-song set on the steps of the festival hall as thousands of people crammed the street in front of the seafront building.

"Happy birthday, Cannes," lead singer Bono said in French, saluting the festival’s 60th anniversary this year.

Bono led U2 through two of their biggest hits, Vertigo and Where the Streets Have No Name.

Directed by Catherine Owens and Mark Pellington, U2 3D captures the band during their Vertigo tour, performing hits that span their career, from Sunday, Bloody Sunday to Beautiful Day.

The film uses the latest 3D technology, and audience members watch through special glasses that resemble ordinary sunglasses, rather than the red and green 3D specs of old.

Band members appear to leap off the screen during the 55-minute film, due to be released later this year.

Bono’s coming, but don’t look under the Joshua tree

International activist/rock star Bono is in Oakland today to meet with African-American leaders about their community’s rampant HIV/AIDS problem, a visit the city’s congresswoman hopes will spotlight the disease’s toll.

But if you’re hoping to get a glimpse of him — well, good luck.

The U2 front man — recognized among Time magazine’s 2005 Persons of the Year for his work on issues of debt relief and HIV/AIDS, especially in Africa — will meet behind an East Oakland church’s closed doors at 9a.m. with local service providers and their clients and at 10a.m. with community religious leaders before holding a brief news conference.
