Although releasing the documentary film Here Is What Is on DVD next month, as well as a CD of the same name, musician and acclaimed producer Daniel Lanois is probably packing his bags now. On Monday, he’s off to Dublin to begin recording with U2 on their next studio album, the follow-up to 2004’s How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb.

“I’m going to work with them in a week,” Lanois says from Los Angeles.

“We’ve had a few very successful jam sessions so far, including one in Morocco. I’m very excited about what we’re doing. Everyone has an appetite for breaking new ground and everybody wants to make a masterpiece. Read the rest of this story »

A contemporary art auction spearheaded by U2 frontman Bono and British artist Damien Hirst drew a star-studded audience Thursday night and raised more than $42 million for programs battling HIV and AIDS.

Organized by auction house Sotheby’s and Manhattan’s Gagosian Gallery, the so-called (Red) Auction — named for Bono’s fundraising effort battling AIDS in Africa — offered up 83 works by artists including Hirst, Jasper Johns, Jeff Koons, Banksy, Tracey Emin, Willem De Kooning and Julian Schnabel. A hotel owned by U2’s Bono and The Edge had to be evacuated last night after a small fire broke out according to Reuters.

Four units from Dublin’s Fire Brigade were called to The Clarence at 11pm after a minor blaze occurred in the hotel’s basement.

A spokesperson told the Press Association: “It was quite a small fire down in the basement where old bits of carpet lying around caught on fire. So there was no real danger there.

“I know there were about 90 people evacuated but nobody was in any real danger.

An extraordinary array of contemporary art will go under the hammer tomorrow for Red, the brand created by U2 star and activist Bono, to raise money to combat the Aids epidemic in Africa.

The auction features mainly new works donated by more than 60 artists, including Jasper Johns, Jeff Koons, Tracey Emin and Anthony Gormley. At a conservative estimate, it could raise $28 million in a few hours of bidding.

The event has been organised by Bono and Damien Hirst, who has contributed seven pieces, including one of his signature medicine cabinets full of pills, entitled Where There’s a Will, There’s a Way. Read the rest of this story »

Behind the glitz and glitter of the 50th annual Grammy Awards, there is something special going on to help victims of the 2005 hurricanes in the Central Gulf region. Founded by U2’s the Edge, Gibson CEO Henry Juszkiewicz and legendary producer Bob Ezrin, Music Rising is an organization dedicated to replacing musical instruments lost in the devastating storms.

“I wouldn’t be where I am today without the unique musical heritage that is New Orleans,” said U2’s the Edge. “So much has come from that part of America. Despite the fact that their initial rise to success happened when I was a toddler, U2 has easily become one of my favorite rock bands. I was excited when I heard that U2 was coming out with U2 3D, a full length movie of one of their concerts. I was even more excited when I heard there was a U2 3D widget that uses the Clearspring platform.
