My Dream Duet: U2 and...

My personal choice for dream duets is U2 and The Police. Although I
think they got together in the 80's, I doubt if they played together
on the same stage (except for maybe only Bono joining the Police).

Bono's voice and Sting's voice are a perfect match. They both don't
have range in the octave sense (like a Michael Bolton) but they do
have the most unique and distinguishable voices in the industry. Hear
the line Bono sings in Band Aid's "Do They Know It's Christmas" with
Sting in the backgroud, it's a perfect match! They're both genius
songwriters too so they'll definitely be doing great lyrics.

Andy Summers and the Edge both prefer not to do solos but rather add
some atmosphere. The best songs of U2 feature Edge's repetitive,
minimalist styles without solos or little solos (Pride, Streets, Still
Haven't Found) while Andy thrives on his 9th progressions (Every
Breath You Take, Message In A Bottle, De Do Do Do) and his
reggae-style ska-punk playing (Roxanne, So Lonely, Can't Stand Losing
You) that was actually the influence of most ska-punk bands of this
generation (Sublime and No Doubt). Just imagine Edge going through
his high repetitive chords (like In God's Country) while Andy supports
it with his own "white-reggae" guitars! That would be really cool!

As for Larry and Stewart Copeland, I think Stewart prefers to
improvise and play around with those cymbals while Larry is a sharp
and straightforawrd drummer. Larry can be providing the main beat
while Stewart can be adding some atmostphere. And they can even
"reply" to each other with drum rolls! Songs with two drummers don't
necessarily sound bad or loud, a good example being the Icicle Works'
"Whisper To A Scream." The drumming sounds so great as the drummers
take tunrs in doing rolls as they reply to each other.

This would really be a dream duet for me,although The Police have been
disbanded for more than a decade already. But then again, in the
Eagles' comeback album, "Hell Freezes Over" they said "For the record,
we never broke up, we just took a 14 year vacation." Maybe the Police
are just on vacation and will soon comeback to jam with U2 (Bono and
Sting are friends from Amnesty so this isn't a far fetched idea)

Anyone agree or disagree with me? or anone with comments? Email me
privately....

Cheers,

J
