This talk of U2 and REM selling out is one of my pet peeves. I think
it's elitist. It's like when these bands were new and had a "cult"
following, some of the "fans" thought "hey, this is *our* secret, the
rest of the world is too dumb to get it". Well, then a gazillion people
got the message, started buying their albums and buying concert tickets,
and these people started to gripe that they'd "sold out". They think in
terms of the "dumb, semi-literate masses out there" This is ridiculous.
What's a group supposed to do, struggle with a cult following their
entire careers? Nonsense. If a group is really good, then they will get
millions of fans. Why do these people think the average rock fan is
stupid? Can you say "egomania"?

Pax,
Patricia
