Some More Bootleg Thoughts

In thinking more about my post of earlier today and the recent crackdown
(Danyel Ramelow, Geraldo, Danny Best, MC Records, etc.), is it possible that
bootlegging may have finally exploded into more of the mainstream....so to
speak and this is the way its being contained?? Not sure exactly what I mean
by that but...........let me see if I can explain. 4 years ago, I was so happy
to find the Dublin ZooTV show that I paid a ridiculous price for it, but it was
well worth it....at the time. Same thing with the Sydney ZooTV show. And they
were the only bootlegs I ever saw from the ZooTV Tour....anywhere. Now maybe
its my own fault for not looking hard enough, but they were just nowhere to be
found. Since becoming a member of Wire and checking out various people's
homepages (not naming any names as the recent crackdown may be coming from an
inside informant), there are numerous shows that exist but quality varies
widely. Now....with technology improvements, I think a bootleg is available
for every PopMart show in excellent quality, relatively speaking of course. I
have purchased and traded for several shows that are phenomenal audience
recordings that I question whether these were even possible during ZooTV, due
to technological improvements in digital recording, etc. Now with CD Writable
Drives and minidisc recorders available everywhere, the marketplace is growing
and growing. The same store I purchased my Dublin show now has a large
shelf-full of bootlegs. Unfortunately, the price is still about the same (give
or take $5) however, I have noticed the majority are now CDRs and I suppose
that's when everyone (including myself) gets pissed off.

Therefore, four years ago when it was just a small problem, no when really
cared. Now everyone with a home computer can make a few bucks on the side
(some more than others no implications.......no names again), can produce
these things with little trouble.

Just some thoughts while waiting for a hurricane....actually I guess Bonnie is
just a tropical storm now.
