my vote: no "best-of" album.

i must say: i really don't want U2 to be releasing a greatest hits album
anytime soon. obviously, a record exec would see this as a good time to
release a U2 best-of album, considering that 1999 will mark the 20th year
anniversary of the release of U2-3, and considering that a best-of album
would undoubtedly sell very well, but i simply don't like the idea of
greatest hits albums in general very much. (i'll admit to owning one or two
from other artists - though in most of those cases i also have other albums
from those same artists.)

releasing a best-of album has always seemed (to me) to be an old record
company strategy to generate more sales and to gain more fans by pushing old
and already-released material. the idea makes sense to me, especially in
regards to turning more listeners onto the artist, but i've always felt the
artist should *really* be doing this by generating *new* material.

i can understand if U2 simply don't want to (or are too exhausted to...)
generate more new material at the moment. but if they feel an immediate need
to release the few new songs they've apparently written (which i personally
would *love* to hear), they should release the songs on anything BUT a
generic best-of album. a CD packed with their best b-sides, or their best
live material, or a full set concert would be wonderful. but if they come up
with nothing more than the typical best-of CD with those extra songs thrown
in, i'd have to give the idea a thumbs down.

always,

yohan
