hi all,
I'm new to Wire...after reading for a few months over the net I decided to
subscribe so I can have my say.

I personally think this Greatest Hits rumour is just that.... a rumour. If
we really thought about it for more than a few seconds, it is something that
U2 would not do, and definitely not now! Pop was a good album, but many
people didn't see it that way, and it did not sell as much as what previous
records did...put this down to the crappy state the music industry is in or
whatever, but I think people just don't appreciate what U2 is trying to do
in pushing rock'nroll to its limits and beyond. I think U2 realise this
state of affairs and know that to put out a Greatest Hits record at this
time would leave them open to attack (from fans who believe they've
supoosedly "sold out" and also by rock critics who would put it down to
lagging sales and the "end of the band").

Let's get one thing straight! U2 is not over! There are still so many
things they can do with their music before they decide to call it quits.
They've pushed this whole dance, hip-hop, techno thing far enough now (some
believe maybe too far if you look at some of the ridiculous remixes that
came off Pop). I believe that U2 will now return to their own 'roots' as a
band and draw off that. This talk about the new sound being similar to War
and Unforgettable Fire is probably the most noteworthy 'rumour' that has
come out recently.

I don't believe however, that U2 would repeat a particular sound that
they've done before, so the next album will sound remarkably different from
anything they've done before. I personally, would like to see them explore
the more heavier side of rock that they've only experimented with in the
past with songs such as Exit and HMTMKMKM and perhaps The Fly. These songs
are great and some of the best songs that the band has written.

I think the next album should also be produced by U2, get rid of Flood and
whoever else has worked with them before....I want the next album to be
totally U2, U2 written, played, produced. I don't think the album will be
out until next year though. If this PopMart video thing is true, that will
definitely be out before Christmas this year...that will give fans something
for a while and then they can hit us with the album next year.
It's gonna be great guys, be patient and don't slag off the band for taking
their time, it will be spectacular.

"lookin for the sound that's gonna drown out the world"

Wilson.
