I uhm...made a boo-boo. This is an apology to Matt "Pleeker"
McGee who didn't get credit for the Sunday Independent article
that appears in this week's U2News.

Matt didn't complain or anything, but he could have -- he should
have recieved a note of thanks for the article. Sorry 'bout that
Matt...

Condensed from CNN:

The article is entitled "Clinton Up To Golf Challenge":

He described his pleasure at visiting Northern Ireland and Ireland
for the second time, the last in fall 1995, and said one of the
highlights was meeting again with the Irish rock band U2 and its
lead singer, Bono. ``They're nice people. He's a smart man.''

US President Bill Clinton met U2 in Dublin yesterday. An article

(Prarit's note: As you will note in the article below, U2 is signing
yet ANOTHER $50 million dollar contract! Of real interest is that
in the very first article of this week's U2NEWS, that the source of
the article on the Polygram regional meeting said that he had
heard that Paul McGuinness was was "currently in New York
talking over "money" issues with Island".)

>From The Financial Times:

SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 5 1998
U2 sign $50m archive deal
By Alice Rawsthorn

U2, one of the world's most successful rock groups, has
reached one of the most lucrative deals in the music industry, with
PolyGram, its record company, which is expected to earn the
band more than $50m in advances.
The three-album deal, scheduled to be signed early next
week, will allow PolyGram's Island Records subsidiary to release
three Best Of U2 albums. The first, including recordings from
1980 to1990, goes on sale in November.
Other superstars, such as Madonna and Janet Jackson,
have clinched $50m-plus contracts but they have covered new
material, rather than back catalogue.
Paul McGuinness, U2's manager, clinched the deal for
the four-member band against the backdrop of the $10.4bn
takeover bid for PolyGram by Seagram, the Canadian drinks and
entertainment group.
Seagram agreed the takeover with Philips, the Dutch
consumer electronics company that owns 75 per cent of PolyGram,
in May.
However, it has had to postpone completion until it has
secured clearance from the European Commission, now expected
in late October.
                PolyGram's trading performance has deteriorated
because of the unsettled state of its executives and recording artists
since Seagram unveiled its surprise bid.
Seagram is anxious to prevent PolyGram's condition
worsening before it takes control. Philips needs to stabilise it to
avert a further reduction in the bid price. It has already had to
accept a $200m cut in Seagram's original offer.
The November release of an album by U2, which has
already sold more than 87m albums, is guaranteed to bolster
PolyGram's performance during the vital pre-Christmas sales
period.
The U2 deal is well-timed for Seagram. A large part
of the $50m advance is payable to the band on signing the contract
next week, when PolyGram will be under Philips' control.
However, the first of the three albums goes on sale in
November, after Seagram expects to have assumed ownership.

As I was watching highlights this evening, they had a short article
on McGwire's race for 61 home-runs. They replayed his 55th
home-run. They guy who caught it in the stands was wearing a
POPMart tour t-shirt! :)

US First Lady Hillary Rodham-Clinton mentioned U2 in a speech.
Someone mentioned this on EXIT or WIRE(I can't remember which)
and there is an interesting article at Zoonation on it.

Argentines to dig up torture camp for victims' remains

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) -- An Argentine court has given
the go-ahead for forensic anthropologists to dig up the
grounds and search for victims' remains at the most
infamous torture center of the 1970s' "Dirty War."

A Buenos Aires' federal court, petitioned by a man whose son
was among 5,000 people who "disappeared" in the Navy
School of Mechanics (ESMA), said Thursday it had granted
permission for excavations.

Human rights groups estimate that 30,000 people died or
"disappeared," meaning their bodies were never found. Official
records list 15,000 victims of the military's campaign against
leftist guerrillas and suspected sympathizers.

Thanks to Oli G for the following information:

Today, I received a full color A4 (for Americans: approx 20
x 30 cm) two-sided and laminated press info sheet about the
Popmart video release. I assume that the artwork will be
similar as on this info sheet. I can't scan it, so here's a
description:

front side:
The background is grey/silver and it has the same orange arch
as on the cover of the tour programme. On the bottom, there's
a light blue circle filled with dark blue with "U2" written in
white over it (I've never seen them use this font before). Below
the circle, there's a pink strip with "POPMART" written in white
andn orange frame around it. Under the frame, also in the pink
strip, it says "LIVE FROM MEXICO CITY" (also in white). There are
also the square logo of the lemon with the shopping cart orbiting
around it (see the "pop for the future" page in the tourbook) and
the round logo or a shopping cart in front or a yellow arch (see
the "pop for clubbers" page). And the remaining of the grey background
is filled with the following quotes:

'U2 blow every conception of live performances
and their alleged limitations out of the water...'
NME

'With perhaps the most inventive staging yet seen,
U2's PopMart tour will be a marker in the history
of stadium performances... the must-see tour
of the year'
HOLLYWOOD REPORTER

'PopMart may well be the most intelligent,
imaginative rock show ever to hit a stadium'
PHILADELPHIA ENQUIRER

'The best time there's ever been
to see U2'
SUNDAY TIMES

back side:
the background is grey again. The layout is too complex to describe.
On the top there is a centered blue title: "Tracklisting"

1*POP MUZIK 2*MOFO 3* I WILL FOLLOW 4*GONE 5*EVEN BETTER THAN
THE REAL THING 6*LAST NIGHT ON EARTH 7*UNTIL THE END OF THE WORLD
8* NEW YEAR'S DAY 9*PRIDE (IN THE NAME OF LOVE) 10*I STILL HAVEN'T
FOUND WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR 11*ALL I WANT IS YOU 12*DESIRE
13*STARING AT THE SUN 14*SUNDAY BLOODY SUNDAY 15*BULLET THE
BLUE SKY 16*PLEASE 17*WHERE THE STREETS HAVE NO NAME
18*DISCOTHEQUE 19*IF YOU WEAR THAT VELVET DRESS 20*WITH OR
WITHOUT YOU 21*HOLD ME, THRILL ME, KISS ME, KILL ME 22*MYSTERIOUS
WAYS 23*ONE 24*WAKE UP DEAD MAN
(numbers: blue, stars: red, song names: black italic)

below, it says:
"A stunning visual feast which contains many of U2's GREATEST HITS"
(note the capital letters !!!)

below there are four images from the concert, from left to right:
Bono, Edge, Larry, Adam

below, there's a pink strip that with "U2" (with a white circle around it)
and "POPMART" (in an orange frame).

under that, there are two images, one of the arch and one of Bono with
Larry and Adam in the background. There are also three more logos
(arch with "POP" over it, lemon with shopping cart, and the normal
Popmart logo (as on the key rings).

below, there's an orange strip with the following typed in black:
