My Sweetest Thing `98 Review (long)

The song is basically the same as the old version. Contrary to
reports about the first version being incomplete, this song has no
added verses. It is around the same length as the original.

Bono's vocals are a lot more "hollow/shallow" than the original. The
1987 vocals had more substance and had a richer tone to it. I guess
that's what cigarettes do to your voice. But then again, Bono's voice
was hoarse in the original (although I personally like the way it
turned out).

During the bridge part, Edge's guitars come out with its distinctive
ringing sound unlike the orginal where the only instrument prominent
was the piano. However, the piano is still the main instument in this
new version (just like the old one).

The song doesn't end anymore with Bono fading out singing "sweetest
thing" but instead he sings some "doo dooos" or something like.
Personally, I think it is quite awkward and isn't that well fit with
the song.

I only heard the RA file so I am not quite sure about this but I think
in this version it is Edge who sings "ohhhh woahhh the sweetest thing."

THE VERDICT: Bono's voice is different now from before but it doesn't
mean it's any better or worse (after all the notes to Sweetest Thing
doesn't require vocal acrobatics unlike Pride, for example). So it's
just a matte of preference. However, I really think the extra guitars
enhance the song to make it better. The problem I have with this song
are the "doo dooos" in the end. So my personal verdict is still
uncertain. Anything could be better depending on the mood.

Doesn't anyone have the tracklisitng for the single? How can one have
the bside and album tracklisting without the tracklisting for the
single?

LAST "UNRELATED" COMMENT: I think the GH album wil be great since it
satisfies hardcore fans (new Sweetest Thing, Bside CD, and live Bad)
while winning them new fans and making alienated fans remember them
(the rest of the tracks). Putting Boyzone in the video gives them
popularity points with the "Spice Girl and Boy Bands Genration."
Their desire to go back to old producers wuld also mean that they have
realized that people like Howie B only made them more alienated to
their long time fans, or maybe they just want to go back to the "glory
days." I can see a U2 resurgence with the new album next year, maybe
somewhere aounrd the 10 to 15 million in US sales. (Hmmm, resurgence
is the wrong word since they have never been down anyway).

LAST LAST COMMENT (POSSIBLE CONFLICT): Could U2's GH alum debut at
number 1? There is potential conflict because Alanis Morissette also
releases her album on Nov. 3, and it is probably the most highly
anticipated release of the year. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

Bye for now,

J
