In Muir Woods, CA, the great redwood trees sometimes hold things called
'burls'. These burls contain the seeds that will someday become new
trees. The burls, however, must be damaged by fire or by cutting the tree
down in order for the seeds to escape and form new trees. In other words,
the big tree has to become wounded or die before the seedlings can be
free to take root and grow.
So, these baby lists aren't a bad thing, just a continuation of something
bigger. But the baby trees, though independent of their mother, must
derive nutrition from her roots below the soil to carry them through
their first few years of life. Which I think applies to these new mailing
lists: they are free to enjoy individuality, but should not forget where
they came from.
Which is why, for the next tour, whenever that is, if we must have
another banner, let it be only one. That might even make a decent slogan,
don't you think?
