No, from personal experience I know that smoking can have an effect very
quickly. I've only been smoking for three years, and for half that time I'd
only have a couple of sticks a day. Since then it's gradually increased to
about half a pack daily. But there's definitely a noticable difference in
vocal quality. My voice has gotten, I don't know, huskier or raspier, it
gets harder to sing along (in tune, at least) to songs like Pride, but a lot
easier to do the like of IYWTVD or the lower voice in Babyface. Several
times I've been able to quit for weeks or months at a time and my voice goes
back to normal, so it's definitely the smoking. Also, I've noticed that
different brands of cigarettes have slightly different effects on my voice
(not instantly, of course, but say smoked consistently over a period of more
than a week).
