Cool stuff about "The Sweetest Thing"

Hi wireland,

Well, I finally heard the new version of "The Sweetest Thing," and rest
assured, those of you who haven't heard it; it's fantastic. I taped it
off the radio and have been looping it for the past day or so, and this is
what I've noticed:

1) Edge's backing vocals are much more pronounced and in the foreground,
so to speak, than they were on the original B-Side version. His voice is
strong and clear, and he does the "Ohh-ohhh-ohhh, The Sweetest Thing"
refrains.

2) Bono's voice is a little slower, a little more crooner-style, and
there's a little bit of the "Lemon" flavor falsetto throughout.

3) Edge's guitar parts really add to the song and give it a new richness.
Has anyone else pointed out that the new guitar parts, in the bridge of
the song, are the same as Edge's solo during 'Tryin' to Throw Your Arms
Around the World' in Dublin, 1993? It's a great sequence of notes and I'm
glad it finally made it into a song.

4) The "do-do-do's" at the end of the song are perfect, because they match
the closing guitar melody. This didn't seem tacked-on to me at all.

Anyway, I think is a brilliant choice for a single. I have an idea,
too--why don't all of us wirelings put it on the top of MTV's request
charts next week, by voting it in? Surely the amount of participants on
WIRE could get it to #1, and once we put it there, I'm sure it would catch
momentum on its own merits. It'd be great to get all those cheesy
performers out of the way, too, and put a real band back on top. Let's do
it! Next week, click on www.mtv.com/mtv/tubescan_launch.html and follow
links to "Total Request Live" and then write-in a vote for U2. Start next
Monday! Post about this often if you think it's a good idea! Tell U2
fans everywhere! :)

best,
Tim McIntyre
