Because of the number of positive responses I've received, coordination of
the cd-r circulation ring that I briefly outlined in my post to Wire
yesterday is beginning.

A web page is currently being designed by a fellow Wireling to act as
homebase for the free U2 CD-R Ring. Hopefully we'll soon have a place for
members to go and view all current shows in circulation, sign up on waiting
lists for shows, etc. More details on that will be coming soon.

I'd like to briefly outline what membership in this ring involves. I'm
sorry that some of this is very business like and unpleasant, but these
things need to be stated.

1. Shows will be FREE. No one is making a profit from this. This is
totally about the music. The only money you will spend is the purchasing of
blank tapes or cds for your personal copies of the shows and postage to send
the show to the next person on the list.

2. To be a member you do NOT need to have a cd burner. Basically, lack of
a cd burner only means that you will have to make tape copies of a show when
it arrives.

3. You will have two weeks from the date a show arrives to copy it for
yourself and pass it along to the next recipient. When you receive a show
you MUST contact me and let me know it has been received. This way we will
be able to update the web site and have quick access to location of shows.

4. Any cd-r sets supplied to this effort are the property of the original
contributor and will be returned to the contributor at any time upon his/her
request.

5. CD-R sets which are circulated in this ring must bear a label stating
something to the effect that "you must contact [email protected]
upon receiving this cd set for tracking purposes". The only reason I say
this is that otherwise people will forget to contact me and tracking will be
a nightmare. With the label right there, it will be an instant reminder.
I'll keep track of the locations of every cd set with this information.
Most likely the web page will be updated at least every two weeks to show
approximately who the current possessor of each show is and who the people
are who are currently waiting in line for it.

6. Any person who fails to forward a cd set in three weeks after receiving
a show will be put on the MOFO list. This three week period will run from
the day you send me your email saying you received a show to the day the
next person contacts me saying they have recieved it. In other words, you
have a maximum of two weeks to copy a show and 1 week to have it shipped and
in the hands of the next person. If you get on the MOFO list, the only way
to become a recognized member again is to forward the show to the next
recipient. The names of all active MOFO's will be kept track of. If you're
a MOFO 3 times in 6 months, you're off the ring (Sorry if this seems harsh,
but you have to admit it's not hard to copy a show and forward it within
three weeks)

7. It looks like membership in this ring will unfortunately HAVE to be
limited. Keeping track of everything the way it has to be will require that
a limit be placed. For right now, the limit is 30 people. Once this thing
gets rolling and we become comfortable with the system, hopefully we'll be
able to take on more. I just don't want to jump in head first and let this
thing get away from us in the beginning.

8. To be a member I'm afraid you have to be in North America(USA, Canada).
I'm very sorry about this, but it wouldn't be fair to the poor student in
Boston who has to ship a show via air mail to Australia to keep from being a
MOFO. I hope that our fellow Aussie Wirelings(and Wirelings across the
world) will put something like this together for their benefit.

9. You can only be on the waiting lists for a maximum of four shows at any
one time. As soon as you're done with a show and have mailed it to the next
person, you can sign up for another. This will prevent waiting lists from
growing too large and people waiting for a year to receive a show they want.

10. Please copy a show at your earliest convenience and have it shipped
quickly. You have three weeks, but moving shows around more quickly would
be to everyone's benefit.

OK, now that all that unpleasant stuff is over, let's get the ring started!
If you've read all the fine print, and you want to take part, all you have
to do is send me an email stating the following:

1. Name
2. Address
3. CD-R sets you have to contribute to the ring (I would recommend not
offering original cd sets as we know some of these things are going to
disappear despite our best efforts.) Remember, you don't have to have any
cd-r sets to join, but it would sure make getting this trading ring started
easier.

Once I have all names and shows compiled, I'll be sending out a list of all
the shows available to the members to look over. You can then make requests
to be on the waiting lists of shows you're interested in. I'd like to get
at least 30 shows into circulation at the beginning of this ring so that
each person will have a show to copy in the first couple weeks.

Please keep in mind that because of the sign up system, there will most
likely be periods when you will be without a show for a few weeks(especially
if you pick shows that are in very high demand), and there may be weeks
where you receive two shows. You must be willing to copy multiple shows in
a two week period or be patient enough to wait a couple months for a show
you want.

Rock on,
Steve
