I totally understand everything you are saying here, but at the same
time, I completely disagree with it. What's wrong with wanting the band
to be successful? Personally, I could care less that most of the kids
at my school listen to Hip hop or country, and that many of them have
never even heard of U2. By getting people to request "The Sweetest
Thing" on MTV, I wasn't trying to do it so U2 could be #1 and that ST
would be a "hit" song. It had more to do with my annoyance with MTV
lately, and wanting them to actually play GOOD music! I can honestly
say that I would love the band just as much even if they were incredibly
unsuccessful.

And about the bootleg thing: The Edge himself has said that he doesn't
mind it, just as long as people don't get ripped off. I own a few
bootlegs myself, which I've bought from various people.

I don't think anyone has the right to say whether or not somebody else
is a "fan". If someone thinks of themselves as a fan, then they are.
Fans shouldn't have to fit certain criteria. It's about the music, and
if you love the music, that's great. There's room for all kinds of fans
out there, so don't discriminate.
