Re: A Reflection Upon Deletion...

Pirate Bob remarked on the deletion of notes from the list. And as
he said, Joel can run the list how he wants since he is the list-
owner. But there is something about all this that troubles me.

I've been on Wire on one non-pseudonymous ID or another since just a
few months after it started (back in about '93 if memory serves me
right?). And some years back I accidentally sent a reply to the list
when I intended to send it to a single person. I wrote to Joel and
said that I meant to send it to one person, could he keep it from
hitting the digest please? He wrote me back well before the next
digest went out and basically said that doing what I asked was
contrary to his better judgment and that he was kinda morally against
doing that (my choice of words about it - I don't remember now if
that's how he actually worded it or not though it may have been). He
said that he refused to interfere with things once they were sent to
the list, period, end of statement - what's done was done.

Now some years later Joel not only said he would have deleted a note
(Reno's thread originator) had he known about it in time, but from
what Pirate Bob's note says he actually *did* delete a bunch of
subsequent notes.

That's kind of disturbing to me that when I made a mistake he
wouldn't honor the wishes of the author, but when someone, or a set
of someones, *want* their note to appear the listowner would indeed
delete them, intentionally interfering afterall. Then again, the
entire face of Wire has changed a lot since way back when. So
perhaps that's had an effect on Joel's judgment of how to handle
posts, which is understandable.

This isn't an attack against Joel the Person. I don't know him at
all. What I do know is that he's a cool enough dude to provide this
forum for us. But regarding Joel the Listowner, l find those two
tangibly unrelated, yet conceptually related, incidents a bit
unsettling.

Oh well. I guess that's all I have to say about that.
