Very Dear Wire readers,

Here is a copy of the letter I sent to VH1 ( [email protected] ).
Maybe you would like to as well?

(Not-So-)Dear VH1,

This e-mail is in regards to Robin Dorian's intended humorous remark
about Bono's needing to apologize for Popmart. In the first place, I
guess I can't really blame her since she probably doesn't write the
material that ends up on her cue-cards/teleprompter. However, if she is
indeed responsible for the drivel which polluted the airwaves, may I
suggest that on Nov. 3 she watch the video "U2 - POPMART - Live From
Mexico City". It is highly evident from her quip that she hasn't seen a
full show of the Popmart tour (if she has, then her comment is
completely unforgivable). I have been a fan of U2 since their inception
(when "Boy" was released, I was a freshman in high school, i.e., they
are in every way a band of my gereration). I absolutely love U2's music
from the '80's; I grew up with them. However, neither U2 nor my musical
taste stopped maturing after the release of the CD/movie "Rattle and
Hum". IMHO, U2 has been a much more interesting act in the '90's as
opposed to the '80's. This may be regarded as heresy, but "The Joshua
Tree", even though I love the album, doesn't even make the top 3 among
my favorite U2 albums (it's #4, behind (in order) "Achtung Baby", "POP",
and "War"). That's right, a devout fan of '80's U2 lists two of the
band's '90's releases as his two favorite U2 albums!
You know, the only things that don't evolve are dead things. Well,
I'll let you draw your own conclusion in this regard. I just hope that
the narcissism which pervades VH1 hasn't destroyed her ability to accept
valid criticism ( - but I'm not optimistic).

David Way

P.S. I saw Popmart four times and wish I had seen them four more times.
This was one of the most incredibly wonderful tours I have ever seen. No
one with any kind of taste could have disliked this show. Hmm...perhaps
that is a revealing remark.
