elmo, wirelings,

>alas, what is with the band?

I'm glad someone else is asking the same question, i was starting to
think Wire had lost its collective mind.

>i find myself almost agreeing with people who comment to me that u2
>have sold out with this compilation

Ditto. Only i don't hear enough of these people.

>(having spawned some of the most truly memorable live and recorded
>moments in recent decades; having practically reinvented the term
>'reinvention'; and having in bono one of the all time great lyricists.)

Ah yes... these are the reasons why i love them. And hey man, give Edge,
Adam and Larry a break - the whole is greater than the sum of the parts
<g>

> i don't think that u2 are doing this for the money - it's obvious
> they have plenty.

Then why do you think they are doing it? I can't really fathom it out. I
*can't* accept the idea they are trying to save Island records arse cos
there are much better ways they could go about it. They've not exactly
been prolific or helped their record company's bank balance over this
last decade by only putting out 3 albums (compared to this time in the
80s when were just putting out their 6th full length LP - and in U2's
case quality didn't suffer because of the quantity - except maybe on
Silver and Gold LOL :-D). If they wanted to generate interest for Island
i wish they had put out a new album and not the lazy, cop-out greatest
hits compilation.

>u2 are capable of work so far above this.

That's was really pisses me off about it. We *know* that they can do
better, we *know* they are the best band on the planet and to not see
them realise their full potential is tragic.

>(i have to say, that being a collector, i'll buy all the associated GH
>releases regardless.)

And they know that and seemingly exploit the fact. I can't believe Edge
has the audacity to tell some fans they were doing the b-sides as a
freeby. I think it would be fair to say that those who claim to be U2
fans already have all the songs that are featured on the GH album and so
don't need to buy it. But what do U2 do to make us buy it? They attach
their b-sides album - a compilation of songs that have not been readily
available before and that a lot of fans would like to have on cd - milk
the fans for all their worth eh?

Bono knows we've got a deal - we give them a shit load of money and they
try not to fuck up. I almost feel like asking for a refund <g>
