Anne:
>>I am jealous of you for only one reason: that you have the loads of
money required to chase U2 all over the world and stay in their 4-
star hotels, thus having easy access to them, while ordinary fans
like myself who cannot afford to stay in those hotels get to wait
outside them in the freezing cold for hours and hours for a once-in-a-
lifetime chance to meet the band.<<

I have to say that I am very surprised that you said this, and
frankly, that you said it *to me.* I think that's pretty cool that
you were willing to do that. And that's why I am replying publicly
to you, because I want to acknowledge that - and to explain to you
how I/we manage it...

Anne, I don't *have* loads of money. Not at all. I'm comfortable
enough because I still live at home. But I work freelance because my
time is worth more to me than money is, and I've just finished up
grad school which = not a lot of money. The key is having the *time.
* And that is something I did have plenty of. To give you an
example... Shit, Aingeal had way less money - but even more time.
And she ended up going to 14 more shows than I did!

Once I've learned told what hotel to book, the way we do this is by a
bunch of us crowding into one hotel room. We've told Bono about it
and he thinks we're nuts, but he also thinks it's funny. One time I
was on the phone with him (something prearranged by his assistant) in
the hotel and he was floored, but laughed, when I told him there were
eight of us staying in our one little hotel room with two twin beds!
And when you divide $200 (average nightly room cost) by 8, it only
comes out to $25 + tax! That's not so bad. And I usually tried to
choose cities, whenever possible, that had multiple shows so that I
got 2-3 shows for the cost of one mode of transportation to that
region. (When we will ease up and go into maybe 2 or even 3 rooms
for the lot of us is when the hotel is having a special. Like last
year the band hotel in Detroit was only $115 a night!! So I think we
got 3 rooms that time, just to give ourselves that occasional
breathing room.)

I mean, there's a lot of annoyance that goes along with it. You have
to figure out someway of getting eight students' worth of crappy-
looking suitcases up to the room in the 5-star hotel without arousing
too much suspicion; you have to deal with 4-6 people sleeping on the
floor (a human minefield when you have to go to the bathroom in the
middle of the night!). You practically have to take numbers to use
the bathroom, etc...

But in the end, it's all worth it because you have memories you can
take to the grave. But contrary to what you somehow got wind of,
I'm not loaded - I'm only reasonably comfortable, *but* very, very
determined. And honestly, if you can make the time next tour that
comes, my friends and I would be happy to have you along with us.
Afterall, the more people in the room the cheaper is gets! LOL :-D

In The Name Of Love, Patty
