R U gonna Q for U2?
by Keith Barrett

A NEW CD is being released by U2 next week, and with the prospect of masses
of people filling shops on Monday morning, Zhivago in Eyre Square will open
their doors at 12am (midnight Sunday) to accommodate the rush. After 31 hit
singles and nine full albums, U2 remain the biggest band in the world. In
total they have sold over 87 million albums worldwide, and in the course of
their Popmart tour they played to a record 6 million people. And they have
a new album out next week, U2 - The Best Of 1980-1990. But will this be a
normal release? In a word......no.

The first week of issue will be a strictly limited edition, including a
second CD consisting entirely of B-sides, most of which were never
available on CD before. Not only will the first week of sales be entirely
the limited edition, after the week they will never be available to buy
again. Never, as in, when a record store orders them for the first time,
they can't do it again.

This is going to make the CD an immensely collectable item, and to
highlight the fact, all CDs bought in Zhivago on its first day in the shops
will be embossed with a message that reads 'Zhivago - first day of issue',
just to make it all the more collectable. General manager of Zhivago
Records Des Hubbard says: "We're opening at midnight because this is going
to sell like hot cakes, hotter than hot cakes. It has the potential to be
our best selling album of the year, possibly ever."

The last time the company opened at midnight was for another U2 release,
Achtung Baby, and proved to be a big success. After the first week, the
Best Of... will be available in all formats, but not with the B-sides. And
keep an eye out next week for our competition, in association with Zhivago
Records, where a lucky punter will win the complete works of U2 on CD. Read
all about it next week.
