Record shops across Ireland open at midnight tonight as
U2's greatest hits collection goes on sale, with the
expectation of becoming the country's biggest-selling album
ever.

More than 100,000 copies of U2: The Best of 1980-1990 have
been ordered by retailers, making it the largest release in
Irish musical history.

The midnight openings of 30 record shops on both sides of
the Irish border will mark the launch of a limited edition
double CD pack, featuring 15 of the band's B-sides from the
1980s along with the main album.

The regular edition collection of 14 tracks, featuring hits
such as New Year's Day, Pride and All I Want Is You, is
released on its own on November 9.

U2 remain Ireland's most successful rock group ever with
album sales topping more than 75 million over a 20-year
period.

Irish record chain Golden Discs said its orders for the new
album were the biggest it had ever placed.

Chief executive Tony Killoran said: "The stores have never
experienced such excitement and anticipation from the public
as for this U2 album. It is unprecedented."
