fighting/being a fan

Hey Wire,

As I begin this post I'm saddened for two reasons: (1) The fighting on
Wire, and (2) People who put labels on being a fan.

I'm not going to go into the fighting thing, I've addressed that before
and I just read at least two posts on the issue. I will say, however,
that it's stupid.

As for putting labels on being a fan . . . This makes me thoroughly sick!
I've been listening to our boys for well over ten years now. During that
time I've purchased all the studio albums on CD, I've subcribed to Wire
for the past two years, read several U2 biographies, and watched countless
hours of television coverage. At the same time, I don't have any
bootlegs, subscribe to Propaganda, and I only saw two Popmart shows. I am
not, however any less of a fan than someone who does/did those things. In
fact, I would be hurt if someone told me I wasn't a devoted fan or I was
less of a fan than someone else. Likewise I don't feel I'm any more of a
fan than someone who has only one or two albums.

I'm reminded of my very close friend who introduced me to U2. He only
owns about three of U2's albums but he loves them all. He has just chosen
not to purchase them. I would NEVER accuse him of not being a fan just
because he doesn't have all the studio albums and I do.

Sorry, for my picking of nits but I was set off by some moron in today's
(11.9.98) issue of Wire that called someone else an idiot because they
didn't know from which album October came. To whomever that was: Next
time get that log out of your own eye before you start picking specks out
of another's eye.

After all, we are one but we're not the same fan.

cya,

david
