So I went to this event tonight at my school, called An Evening of
Spoken Word. If you don't know what spoken word is, it's basically
poetry as music, or the exploration of words as sound. Our event
included up-and-coming pioneers of spoken word such as Jessica Care
Moore and Saul Williams (who is also in the upcoming film Slam).

So Saul Williams was talking about What Hip-Hop Needs Today... just
talking, not necessarily poetry, just talking. About how hip-hop (and I
know not all of you are into hip-hop much... but bear with me),
recently, is not connected to anything. Not connected to the audience,
just to sex and money and image and whatever.

And then. He speaks loudly and clearly. He says: "Take U2, for
instance..." I take a deep breath and squeeze my friend's hand. And
the rest of his speech comes out SO RIGHT. He says something like,
"Take the beginning of Sunday Bloody Sunday... (and with his voice he
imitates the opening drumbeat). Now that's something Roni Size should
be listening to right now.. that could be a whole song by itself. But
then Bono's voice kicks in.. (and he sings so sweetly) 'I can't believe
the neeeews todaaaay', now THAT is connection. No matter what you know,
how you feel about what's going on in Ireland politically or otherwise,
this man's voice will TOUCH you... get you in the gut. And that's what
all of music needs today. Another 'Sunday Bloody Sunday'."

And with that the audience broke into cheers and applause and Saul
Williams segued into his next piece.
And I thought I'd share that with all of you.

Keep on Dreaming Out Loud (I know I do),
amanda
