My sort of homecoming/Why U2

The other day Rose posted a very good question--why U2? Why are we all
here? I've been wanting to write about this for awhile now. I'm
definitely a fan of their 80s music, and the Best Of cd was like coming
home. Yes, I have all of those albums anyway. But the new compilation is
just an excuse to listen to them all again. My heart stops every time I
hear WOWY. Even on the radio (but that's an extra bonus because I know
there are hundreds of other people listening to that song with me). For
me, U2 is all about the music. And Bono ;) I have very definite opinions
on their music, but as for collectables, numbered CDs, personal lives of
the band--count me out.

So... I just have to take a moment to talk about the B-Sides... I think
the B-Sides are incredible! Especially "Walk to the Water" and "Luminous
Times." I feel like I found a new album of 80's music from them! I guess
I did. I hadn't heard most of those songs before, and they instantly
transported me back to the 80s. Their sound was so fresh and haunting and
alive! I just LOVE Edge's guitar!!! The sound also reminds me of my high
school days when I listened to their music religiously, discovering the
greatness of Boy, October, War, UF. Even though I know the group has to
change, I was sad to see that distinctive sound disappear in the 90s.
Although AB and POP are very high on my list of favorites, and some of the
singles are personal anthems, I had just about given up on that sound I
grew up on. But thanks to U2 (PolyGram, whomever) I have a new 80's U2
album!!!!!!!!!! And I don't have to spend $100 on imports :) It's my own
sort of homecoming.

Regards,
Tanya
