Changes to U2-NEWS a'coming!

'lo everyone. A few things to alert you about -- there will be some
minor, MINOR, changes to U2-NEWS over the next few weeks.

1) I'm debating about inserting a search engine on the site so
people can find previous articles easier, instead of searching
file-by-file.

2) The items listed under the NEWS Dates will be hyperlinked
to targets within the text of this page -- that should also make
easier access for those using the WWW to read this page.

3) I'm debating about sending out the digest any time it hits
50K -- that would cause U2NEWS to occassionally be
delivered twice a week, but hopefully that would be a rarity.
(I'd really only do it if the digest were 130K in size like it was
last week...)

4) I'm still looking for concert reviews, etc., especially
**POPMart** concert reviews from the various shows for
the history section. If you attended a date that does not have
a description, please send it my way -- full credit will be given!
I'm also looking for all types of pictures, etc., from EVERY
POPMart show...

I think that's it -- there will probably be one or more minor
changes that I've forgotten about -- oh, yeah, I removed that
awful Top 1000 Sites counter that didn't load most of the
time, or didn't register hits properly...<groan>

Anyhoo, have a groovy day, :)

Prarit.

Apparently in an MTV Europe interview, Bono said something to
the effect of(this is not a quote!) : "Our next album will be our last
album if it flops....Our egos are too big to be in a crap band."

Prarit's comments: IMHO, and I suppose I'm going to be
accused of wishful thinking, this means all sorts of things. I haven't
seen the interview to know whether or not Bono was (as usual)
joking around or if he was being half-serious. If he was joking
around, then let's move on, it didn't mean much, our fav'rit band
will be together for a nice long time, and none of the rant below
matters.

If he was serious though, there are a few things I'd like to
address:

Let's face it, people--As much as you or I like POP, it flopped.

Hard.

Sales did not meet expectations -- even by a long shot. And as
unfortunate as it sounds for non-Americans, the only place that
matters in music to record executives is the good ol' US of A.

U2 is an established band -- that put out a GOOD album. But
that album was not GREAT, and nor were the sales. The show
accompanying the album was, at times, amazing(Edmonton, June
14th, 1997 -- if you were there you know what I'm talking about)...
But it still was not a commercial success. Recent reports indicate
that the concert tour may have made less than $10 million US in profit.
Chump-change in today's entertainment world -- Movie stars like
Stallone and others make $15-$20 million a picture!

It seems that U2 have faced the facts, realizing that they are a money-
making conglomerate. The financial situation of the band has been
questioned in the past year(Ossie Kilkenny and that whole German
Bowling Alley nightmare), leading to rumours that the 4(5 if you include
manager Paul McGuinness) members of the band were broke. The
question must be asked -- has the band made ANY substantial profits
in this last decade?

ZooTV -- No. The band, by all accounts, barely broke even.
PopMart -- No. The band, again, barely broke even.

This is not the way to run a band. The recording of POP,
if one listens to The Edge, was completed according to a
deadline -- and that band were seemingly not entirely happy
with the final product (Last Night On Earth was not remixed
for the single version -- it was completely re-recorded).
The band themselves have indicated that they wished they
could have had more time with the album -- really, would a
one or two week delay been a big deal to give the fans what
they wanted?

One thing that I've noticed with the release of the "Best of
U2: 1980 - 1990", is that retailers and critics have seemingly
resisted the "saviour-complex" that they assigned U2 in
many interviews during the release of POP. Then, there must have
been 10 - 20 articles that mentioned how the release of the new U2
album was going to save the music industry's sagging sales.
With the release of the Best of package, the moniker seems to
have disappeared -- maybe a bit of clarity/reality from the
powers-that-be in the music industry?

I'm completely ignoring the fact that the members of U2 may
be doing this for fun. I suppose that could be true, but when
one hears about Bono's comments...You just have to wonder
what happened to the guy that said, "It's been quite a year
for U2, we've seen our record go to the top of the American
Charts...even Time magazine put us on the cover, you know...
But it was never our intention to be #1, or be on the cover of
Time magazine....I don't know about you, but I feel good about
the fact that I still haven't found what I'm looking for..."(Chicago,
1987).

Condensed from Addicted To Noise:

U2, No Doubt, Coolio, Mtley Cre, Madonna, Fugees, LL Cool J,
Puff Daddy, Robyn Hitchcock, Barenaked Ladies...

Irish rockers U2 entered a Dublin studio two weeks ago to begin
work on their next studio album, which is in its "very early days,"
according to the group's U.K. publicist. Again the band has tapped
the team of ambient-legend Brian Eno and producer Daniel Lanois
(Luscious Jackson, Willie Nelson) to produce the album, which is
not yet scheduled for release. Eno and Lanois collaborated with U2
on several of their most commercially successful, multi-platinum
albums, including 1984's The Unforgettable Fire, 1987's The
Joshua Tree and 1991's Achtung Baby. "[It's] too early to say
what new ideas are coming up, but the only thing that is appearing
as a theme, as an idea, is an attempt to do the most difficult thing
in music, which is to create joy. That is extremely hard," Eno told
Britain's New Musical Express.

Paul Oakenfold Makes Guinness Book Of World Records

Many people have been hyped as the most popular DJ in the world,
but when both the Guinness Book of World Records and DJ
magazine say it, it must betrue. Paul Oakenfold is the recipient of
he honorable tag, as the influential U.K. club culture magazine, DJ,
has named him the No. 1 DJ of 1998, and the Guinness Book of
World Records has him as the most successful club DJ in their
1999 book.

The entry on Oakenfold reads: "Paul Oakenfold has sold 1 million
records and owns the Perfecto music label. He is reported to earn
250,000 ($400,000) a year. The remixer and producer has worked
with U2 and the Rolling Stones, making him the most influential
DJ to have moved from club culture into the mainstream. He has
worked in Australia, the U.S.A., Hong Kong, Brazil, Argentina, and
all over Europe and played at private parties for Madonna, Naomi
Campbell, and Grace Jones."

Oakenfold's first U.S. album, CD Tranceport, was released on
Nov. 3 on Kinetic Records. His Sept. 26 show at the Bowery
Ballroom in New York can be viewed and heard at

TV TRIBUTE FOR OMAGH BOMBING

U2, The Corrs and Bob Geldof featured on an Irish TV tribute to the victims
of
the Omagh Bombing. The special edition of The Late Late Show was broadcast
live on RTE on Friday, November 20.

U2 bookended the programme with the songs 'North And South Of the River'
and
'All I Want Is You'. Bono also spoke about the day in Omagh, Northern
Ireland,
which caused 30 deaths when a Real IRA car bomb went off on August 15.
"The only grain of hope that you can possibly glean from this terror," Bono

said, "is that this has to be the end of it. That was the moment that
marked
the end of The troubles. We have to belive that - the polititians, the
police
and the paramilitaries and priests and whoever, that they will go that
extra
mile now to understand their adversaries and then go one mile further. That
is
the only thing that we can hope for."

There had been speculation that Noel Gallagher was set to appear, but he
was
ill and sent a message instead. He gave the show a cassette, containing a
demo
version of 'She's Electric', recorded before Oasis signed to Creation
Records.
He also sent a gold disc of 'Be Here Now' to Claire Gallagher, an Oasis
fan.
She was blinded by the bombing.

The Corrs had helped to organise the programme, and they sang REM's
'Everybody
Hurts' to an audience that was made up of people from Omagh and Buncrana
who
had been traumatised by the bombing. Other guests included Brian Kennedy
and
Paul Brady.

Bob Geldof brought an angry note into the show by slamming "the shame and
horror of 30 years" and reading from the apocalyptic WB Yeats poem 'The
Second
Coming'. He said that the event had left him "sick with rage". He performed

'The Great Song Of Indifference'.
