Alot of "older" (meaning fans since the 80's) fans find it hard to
relate to or think of post 1990 U2 in a positive way, because it is
different (although IMHO its not much different at all....only slightly
better) from the U2 that they "owned", they U2 they knew and loved. Just
because its different (although again the differences are really only
slights when it comes down to it) does **not** make it any LESS. Less
significant, less powerful, less good, or less U2. If U2 were still
pumping out versions the Joshua Tree I wouldn't be a fan. Simple as
that. Change is everything.

A *FEW* heartfelt tunes?? Everytime they step into the studio its from
the heart! I'm forced to wonder why it is that some older fans cant see
that....just from pop for example every song is meaningful, significant
and ultimately heartfelt. If U2 walk into a studio one day and find that
they *aren't* doing it from the heart anymore that will be then end.

>but not REAL music......no WTSHNN.

I beg to differ. The insinuation that anything other the Streets (pre
1990's) isnt real music is ridiculous. Im surprised that someone who
thinks that way could still even be a U2 fan....

They took a hiatus, so to speak, from some of the emotions they
created in earlier years. I watched the PopMart video, it's great,
but one can easily see a LOT less emotion
with the exception of a few scant songs....than R&H.

I will assume that means you didn't actually go to a Popmart concert.
You can't honestly expect watching a video to compare to the actual
experience, can you? You might as well put in your copy of Pop and then
think "oh the tour wasnt emotional".

>Sure, the emotion was SOMEWHERE hidden in PopMart......but it wasn't

Actually it was. Walking out of the stadium seeing people crying,
crying myself during most of it, partly cause I was happy partly because
the songs can be so tragic (and when Edge did SBS I thought I was going
to explode)....even for those a little less hysterical (lol) ask anyone
who was actually at a popmart concert....it was emotional. Obviously so.

>and the world needs the obvious energy (in words/music), apparently,

Again the energy at Popmart was tangible. You could actually feel it
in your fingers. U2 are kind of in that "damned if you do and damned if
you dont" place in the world...there always gonna be someone (critic,
fan, whoever) saying "No, do it THIS way. I prefer it if you [insert
comment here]". Guilty of this aswell to a certain extent (I love post
90's U2 and want them to keep evolving in that direction...as opposed to
devolving back to JT era styles), but I have to say that while U2 are
doing what makes them happy/fufils them artistically then I'm happy with
them. If that is interpreted as "disguising" their message then I'll dig
for it. But really it doesnt take a brain surgeon to figure out U2's
songs once actually listened to.

I hope I never see "Mr. MacPhisto" again......Bono's poke of jeering
insult at the devil himself. For those of you who like "Mr. MacPhisto",
you just don't get i

To quote bono himself "Having played God for most of the 80's, I
thought it would be fun to play the Devil."....Bono wasn't poking fun at
the devil (for those that believe in that sort of thing) he was poking
fun at himself, his 80's holier-than-thou image and they way the media
represented him. That is why I like MacPhsito (not to mention his very
cool fashion sense lol)...its something fun, and after the heavy heavy
U2 of the 80's I think they needed to lighten up. I love it. 'Light'
doesnt mean fake/forced/unemtional BTW. After all what someone looks
like hs little or nothing to do with how the music feels when its heard.
But I could argue that till the cows come home and this post is long
enough already.

P.S. The song that got me hooked.....no single song but the bits of
Rattle and Hum(movie) where they are just talking...it was an early
indication that this was a band who could have fun and still stand for
something at the same time :o).
