the song that got me hooked

ONE. The first U2 song that I heard was ONE. The tape was bad, hissing
and crackling, some slighter shades and subtler sounds were lost, I
didn't know English quite as well as I do now, but knowing the words
wasn't necessary. I caught the emotion at once, I was slowly burning
with the song, with the ringing guitar in the background, and the
words that I did understand brought something from within me that I
have never known was there, released the emotions that were buried
deep inside. I still think that this is the best song ever written.
The words "we're one, but we're not the same... we get to carry each
other..." are as close to the truth as you can get in this fucked-up
world where we all ask too much and give nothing, keep coming for
forgiveness and refusing to give it ourselves, raising the dead and
then going out to kill. We live in different worlds revolving around
different suns, but still we are one whole, we leave traces in each
other that we can never erase. Thank you because you gave me wings.
It's been more than four years since that and I bought every U2
release that I could put my hands on, went to a Popmart show in Kansas
City (if only I could see more!! but alas...) and I think I will never
get off the best drug in the world -- U2!!!

Totally out of my head and body,
Irina. :)
