Wire,

On the one hand, I do not wish to perpetuate this thread, but on the other
I feel compelled to insert my two cents. (till now, I've been lurking, but
been on the list for over two months)

Although I have not personally met U2, so I really don't know (and none of
you -- or very few -- really do either), but as a musician and songwriter
myself, I think some of you are extremely naive to think that Bono could
write about these things in such vivid, moving detail without actually
experiencing first-hand.

How many people do you know in your life who were hooked on something and
now are clean and now preach against it? Ho many people do you know who
themselves have been casual users, but had a friend or relative lose their
life to the very same thing, and then the casual user swears it off and
preaches against it?

These are just generalizations -- I don't know enough to get into
specifics. My point is that it is very naive to think there has never been
a first-hand experience on the part of the band members of many varied and
different "controlled" substances. And to me, IMHO, someone who has tried
the shoe on, but now refuses to wear it, has a lot more credibility (when
"preaching", anyway) than someone who never put the shoe on their foot.

Also, let's just assume for one second that they do do (or have done in the
past) all sorts of these things. It is a very responsible position they
would be taking in that "reality" to "lie" about it publicly so as not to
glamorize it and/or encourage younger and older fans alike to use. What
they do (or have done) in the studios, dressing rooms, etc. is behind
closed doors and whatever is actually going on (has gone on) back there, it
is obvious they make a big effort to keep it that way -- and so should we.

My two cents. Back to lurking. Please end this debate..is it really worth it?

Kevin
