Drugs, Bono and even a NEW thread!

Well, I would like to start with some comments about the whole drug thing:

1. Where the hell is Nico after that big drop about her doctor friend
walking in on Bono doing a line of cocaine? Its like she just thought she'd
drop that tidbit of meat into a pool of pirhanas (yeah....thats us!) and is
standing back and watching the foray. I know, I know, there are many here
who attest to her wonderful, trustworthy nature...but I guess I would like
some clarification, or some kind of follow-up.
2. Whoever said that "drugs aren't bad, its the people who abuse them" falls
into believing in the myth of neutrality. Granted, there ARE those who can
shoot up, sniff, etc. and not get addicted. But, you see, its like the
belief that "guns aren't bad, its the people who use them." Delving a bit
deeper into the issue, though, if you ascribe to Marshall MacLuhen's
philosophy, then the aphorism "the medium is the message" applies here too.
That is: guns are for killing. It is their nature. Similarly, drugs are
not like a board game that you can just try at any point when you want to
have fun. They chemically interact with your body, forcing it to behave
differently, to change perception and behaviour. Its hard to think of them
as neutral.
3. I think it is naive to say, "Whether Bono did drugs or not is irrelevant
to me." I mean, if it were many other rock stars, I would perhaps agree.
But this is someone who specifically sings against such vices. So, I don't
know about you, but consistency IS important to me. Don't belittle people
who look for that in song writers.
4. If you are sick of people writing about this drug thing (i.e., J) then
skip it as you have been doing and shut up. Posts that whine about how the
posts are unwanted are even more worthy of skipping. Clearly, people on
WIRE have found this to be a sensitive issue. *I* don't find it boring or
repetitive and I think that many feel it needs to be talked out. Let it
work itself out. That goes for a lot of other issues too. I mean, I too am
sick of posts like, "Hey, I woke up and U2 was on the radio! Wow!" but I
am not going to rail against peoples' passion for this band.

Now, here's a new thread. I don't recall if anyone ever mentioned this
before. Did you notice that the words for Last Night on Earth that are sung
for one verse is completely different than what is written in the liner
notes? The written words says something like "The past is too unbearable,
the future is too predicatable" (I don't have it in front of me, I am at
work) but Bono sings, "She hasn't been to bed in a week. She'll be dead
soon, then she'll sleep" Any thoughts on this? I never noticed this
before.

Thanks!
