U2 are old if: we all get into a time tunnel, get out at the 1400 exit
(that's the Middle Ages, folks) and find that the average life
expectancy is around thirty years. Seriously, the very idea that U2 are
old is one of my pet peeves. Talent is something that time doesn't take
away from you; it matures, and you have to keep following it to develop
it. To be blunt, people who are calling U2 "old" don't have any concept
of the relationship between talent and music. They have no concept of U2
being talented. They only think of the transient period of youth and its
long-time association with rock 'n roll. This is ironic, since the first
rock 'n roll hit (Bill Haley and the Comets' "Rock Around the Clock")
came out and hit the charts way back in 1954. Well, that was rock'n roll
dammit!! Are you going to judge it by its age or by its content? This is
a terrible case of ageism. Isn't it ridiculous the way some people think
rock stars automatically run out of gas when they turn 30 or so? I think
it's stupid. No excuses....it's just plain stupidity.

Pax,
Patricia
