In response to J's comments and definitions on Bono's lyrics: PLEASE don't try
to assume you know what someone is thinking when they write a song. I't's
impossible and you may not really understand this unless you're a writer
yourself. It comes from many different places. Yes, personal experience is
one, but so is friends, family, relationships, things you read in the
newspapers, magazines, books, etc...8 or 9 years ago, I was on subway in NYC
and looked over at a little boy who, it appeared, was being mistreated by the
man that was with him. I was obviously affected by this scenario and that
night wrote a song about a child who watched his mother being abused by his
father. It was a good song. My point is: inspiration comes from so many
places, you don't have to actually have the experience to be able to write
well about it. I write in the first person often, but I'm not always referring
to myself. And when you're constructing a song and you're really into it, and
you have a great verse or hook or whatever, you'll think of anything to get
the next line...(And I'm not referring to drugs!!!!)
