Springhill was also played at Cardiff Arms Park in the summer of '87 -
no doubt as a response to the miners strike which affected Wales badly.
I remember getting the impression that when Bono introduced the song, a
mining song that he learned from the Luke Kelly with his 'flaming red
hair', that the audience were expecting Red Hill Mining Town! I think
the crowd repsonded to the song well, half out of confusion mind, but
they really wanted to hear the words to this song that was clearly
intended as a considered treat for the Welsh.
