If memory serves, the digipack/fold-out CD case was made available when AB
was first released, ostensibly as an "environmentally conscious"
alternative to the regular, plastic "jewel case". The whole music biz was
going through another bout of eco-consciousness, like the time when the
old "long box" packaging was attacked as a waste of resources. (Yes, I
kept my few long boxes...I'm amazed at the number of people who ripped
them up and tossed them in the trash!)

Problem is, the digipacks can get worn out after repeated use...which
isn't to say that jewel cases are tougher! Drop one of those, and it's
busted...

I don't think the digipack case is being used for AB anymore--I've seen
various U2 CDs (and CD singles) released in cardboard sleeves, but jewel
cases are still the norm.
