Think about what you're saying

Here are a few quotes from tonight's Wire Digest about the never-ending
drug use debate:

>Anyway, my point is, who cares if he does drugs?

>As long as they make great music with great lyrics, I'm their fan.

>As for drugs, maybe he does, maybe he doesn't, but regardless, Bono is a
>terrific >person.

These seem to be fairly representative of what many have said over the past
week or so during this drug use debate and I'm at the point where I need to
get something off my chest.

There's a group of people here who have chosen to defend the idea that it's
OK if Bono (or anyone else in the band) is a regular drug user because
"it's none of our business," or "it has nothing to do with the music," and
"their private lives shouldn't be the reason we're fans." Some take the
next step and criticize any fan who is bothered by the idea because that
person doesn't have his or her head screwed on straight.

Okay. I agree with one thing many others have said - I highly doubt there's
any regular drug use going on now or before. It wouldn't surprise me at all
if they tried things, but regular use doesn't fit them. That said, if I
found out at some point in the future that I'm wrong, you bet your ass I'd
be bothered by it, and you bet your ass I'd think less of them.

Why is that? Because U2 isn't just about the music to me. The music is
great, but the people are, too. I love the music, and I respect the people
making it. If I find out down the road that they're a bunch of addicts,
that respect goes right out the window. They are not, to borrow another
phrase from the Digest, my "moral heroes." I don't need their help deciding
what's right and wrong morally. I already know what's right and wrong, and
drug use is the latter.

Still, people will defend the idea that drug use is OK, as long as it
doesn't affect the music, which is the reason we should all be fans.

Do you folks realize what you're saying? Here's what you sound like: "Go
ahead and do all the drugs you want, put as much blow up your nose as you
can. As long as I get some good music out of you, who cares?"

Real nice.

Thanks,
Matt
