The period in question is the JT Era and here are excerpts from a
Rolling Stone Interview circa Oct. 1987 (JT ERA!).

To make things shorter, Bono is referred to as Bono and Rolling Stone
as RS.

RS: Do you have idyllic chilhood memories?
Bono: None at all ....
(hmmm... aren't drugs supposed to make you have bad memory?)

RS: The songs represent you because you need to be like the songs you
sing -not that you are yet those things.
Bono: Yes. You want to be.
(So I guess the songs refer to him just as much as they refer to his
addict friend who died of heroin OD ...RTSS was during this time, so I
guess Bono did want to have the sweet sin and bitter taste in his
mouth, and he also did hold the hand of the devil)

RS:Were you curious as a kid, but not in an academic way?
Bono: I was curious...
(And I'm sure he was curious too as an adult adn he wanted to try out
"new things")

RS: Well, two tragic things can happen: one is to not get what you
want, and the other is to get what you want.
Bono: yeah, but we really haven't gotten what we want...
(#1 in all countries and in Billboard and selling out stadiums isn't
getting what you want eh, Bono? I guess you just want more because
you "can't get enough of that lovey dovey stuff")

RS: Well, as WC Fields said, "Start off every day with a smile, and
get it over with." Maybe you're the WC Fields of rock.
Bono: ...I am on top of the world, it's just that something else is on
top of me.
(I wonder what that something is. Take note he used "something" and
not "someone" so he couldn't have been referring to God. So I guess
his God during this time was something else.)

Other Bono quotes:
-"I don't see U2 as a success. I just see U2 s a whole list of
failures: The songs we haven't written and the concerts we haven't
played" (oh well, I wonder where this substance-induced pessimism
came from ...maybe Bono was too high to check the gate receipts or the
Billboard charts, or the money they were making and the fans they were
pleasing and gaining).

Damn, I even haven't gone halfway through the interview and I already
got a really long post with conclusive evidence of Bono's addiction
and excesses. I guess that's life for them rock stars: sex, drugs,
and rock'n'roll (and in Bono's case, it is oral sex as most of your
would insist ..then again Viagra wasn't invented yet in the Achtung
era, and substance abuse contributes to impotency ..no wonder all Bono
could write about was oral sex. The lack of his "equipment
capabilities" must have left him with a defense mechanism of
rationalization by proclaiming oral sex as "even better than the real
thing" ..because he couldn't do the real thing).

No flames please! ;)

Cheers,

J
