A little bird has told me that you kids have been discussing whether or not I am a drug addict. Apparently some of you believe that I have used cocaine. You (and you know who you are) have taken some of my lyrics amd interviews out of context,some of you have even written that if I was a coke addict you wouldn't care? To those "fans" I must ask you- have you even listened to the music all these years?
I don't know how this this rumour got started,and I don't care. But,what is shocking to meis that so many of you (so I'm told) could even fathom for a moment that it would be true. Some of you kids really don't get it do you? Don't you understand that we have transcended that shit. I do not, never have and never will use it. The colors are already bright enough for me. A very close mate of mine died of a heroin overdose;I've seen what drugs do to you. They give you the illusion that you're happy and on top of the world. The music,my family and mates,and MOST of our audience makes me feel on top of the world. I don't need anything else.
It just amazes me how so many of you believe that I have been talking out of my arse for all these years. Do you think I would stand on a stage telling the story behind Bad for example,then run back stage to shoot up or snort a line? Pardon the phrase,but I think some of you have your heads so far up your arses that you don't even know what is going on. This rumour is an insult to myself,my family,Edge,Adam and Larry and to the real fans out there that do get what it's all about.
My suggestion to some of you is that you don't take Wire so seriously,after all it is just an internet mailing list right? I mean,the majority of you are great I'm sure. I've met many of you on tour,and seeing the banner at so many shows meant a lot to us,it really did. But, I must add that there is a world outside of Wire,I've met many long-time fans that don't even know what it is,and don't care to be involved with it. And I don't blame them considering some of the "flame wars" is it? that I've heard about.
So, to the select few of you who think you know me so well,or think you have some inside information on U2, I suggest you take a look at your own lives,and figure out why you got into U2 in the first place. And remember it's not about how many concerts you've been to,how many times you've met us,who you work for,or how many 7" singles you own. Its about being taken away by the music,and those fans mean the most to myself, Edge, Adam and Larry.
