OK--here we go again. No, Bono's voice is *not* dead. I personally much
prefer the vocal of "TST" '98 to the '87 version. I don't like the vocal
on the '87 version--it's too raw, it almost sounds like he had a nasty
chest cold when he did it! Bono had his reasons for re-doing the vocal,
and I think it was a wise decision. The new version is much more sensual
, which is only fitting for a love song. It's a matter of "what do you
like, the earlier vocals or the later ones?" I personally think that
Bono is a much better singer than he was earlier on in their career--his
voice is more sensual and enticing, and more importantly, more versatile
. There's nothing "anemic" or "feeble" about his latest vocals. Plus, he
had those awful problems with his throat on the "Lovetown" tour, which
resulted in the cancellation--or postponement--of several shows. This is
every singer's nightmare. They don't want to put too mouch strain on the
vocal cords, which apparently he'd been doing. I'm just glad he has the
good sense to be careful about this. I'd hate it if he had to quit
because of a screwed-up throat. Can you imagine how he'd feel?

Pax,
Patricia
