Best of 1998 (absolutely no drug/fake Bono content. Promise)

Hi.

So it's that end-of-the-year time when all the major music rags plod
through the year's releases to list the best records released this
year. So, in a vain attempt at starting a new thread on wire, I'm
asking everyone to send in their top ten/whatever lists of what was
released this year.

My picks for the best of '98 (in no particular order):
1. Pulp - This is Hardcore
2. Gomez - Bring It On
3. The Afghan Whigs - 1965
4. Fatoy Slim - You've Come A Long Way Baby
5. Aphrodite & Mickey Finn - Mixmag presents the Takeover Bid
6. Spiritualized - Live at Royal Albert Hall
7. Portishead - PNYC (the video)
8. David Holmes - Essential Mix 01/98
9. Paul Oakenfold - Tranceport (does anyone know why he thanks "Bono and
the boys" in the liner notes?)
10. The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - ACME.

Oh yeah, and props go out to Jurassic 5 for their amazing self-titled
hip-hop debut, but since it was released in the tail end of '97 it
doesn't go on the list. Other honorable mentions go to PJ Harvey and
the Beastie Boys.

Thank you for your resounding indifference.

Off to candyroll,
nick
