City to rock in Nobel finale

By Martina Purdy in Oslo

OSLO is ready to rock to the sound of music giants Phil Collins, Phil
Coulter and Alanis Morissette at the climax of three days of Nobel
celebrations.

Tonight's concert in Oslo's Spektrum is expected to be the grand
finale to mark the Nobel prize giving to John Hume and David Trimble.

However, Mr Hume today ended speculation that Irish supergroup U2
will make a surprise visit.

"I asked (U2 lead- singer) Bono to come but unfortunately he is tied up
with recording a new album."But stars who are due to appear include
country singer Shania Twain and Enrique Iglesias, son of Julio.

In the hours up to the concert, the two laureates had a round of
meetings. Each met separately this morning for half an hour with the
Norwegian foreign minister, Knut Vollebaek.

There was also a joint meeting with prime minister, Kjell Nagne Bonvevik.

The SDLP's Dennis Haughey said today he is looking forward to seeing
his old friend Phil Coulter in concert.

"The first time we heard Phil play we knew he had a great talent but of
course we never realised he would become so famous," he said.

Seagram Absorbs PolyGram, Creates World's Largest Music Company

AP 11-DEC-98

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Seagram Co. became the world's largest
music company with its acquisition of Polygram NV, turning its
attention to an industry that faces slow growth and rapidly
changing technology.

Seagram's Universal Music Group officially absorbed Polygram
on Thursday and announced plans for a cost-cutting consolidation
that will merge some labels and link others into East Coast and
West Coast music groups.

The move is expected to include layoffs for about 3,000 of the new
company's 15,500 employees and a smaller roster of artists.

The roster now includes a diverse collection of artists ranging
from Luciano Pavarotti to rockers U2 and country music's Reba
McEntire. Company officials declined to comment on layoffs or
which artists might be dropped.

The word on the Grapevine

The City Arts Centre/Grapevine celebrates 25
years in business next week. Sandy Fitzgerald,
executive director from the very beginning, talks
to Mic Moroney about the past, present and
ambitious future of the lively community arts
centre on the quays

To celebrate the City Arts Centre/Grapevine's 25
years in business next Wednesday night, former
Arts Council chairman Ciaran Benson will launch a
book of photographs from the early days.

Grapevine moved into the new building and adopted
the more odourless title of City Arts Centre in the
mid-1980s, when they bought the building for about
260,000 with the help of the Arts Council, some
investment in the basement studios from U2 (new
recording equipment is finally coming in next
month) and "sponsorship in kind" from the Allied
Irish Bank - as Sandy says, "basically giving us the
loan, but not that they waived any interest."

Addicted To Noise has another article on the Uni-gram shake-up.
It mentions a list of acts that will not be effected/dropped because
of the takeover.

"UMG's press release included a list of more than 50 popular artists
now signed to the conglomerate, as a result of those artists having
deals with any of the affiliated labels that UMG now comprises. The
list included such high-profile acts as hip-hop/folkie Beck, R&B
artists Blackstreet and Erykah Badu, shock-rocker Marilyn Manson,
hip-hop's LL Cool J and Jay-Z, ska band No Doubt and rock groups
U2 and the Wallflowers."

The Edge and Paul McGuinness were both present at the awarding
of the Nobel Prizes yesterday in Oslo...

"U2 Wall Keeps Pop-ing Up"

Dublin Corporation and local residents in the Windmill Lane are are
furious due to the fact that the wall has been cleaned yet come
night time and the next morning the wall has been resprayed by U2
fans.

Throughout the night up to 20 grafitti artists arrive and return
the walls to their former glory, in fact the murals and designs are
placed with perfect perfection so as to give the idea that nothing
has changed.

Dublin Corporation have asked the Gardai to check and patrol the
area by night as it is to costly to send Corporation workers to
clean the wall every day.

Local residents have seen the nightowls at work with ladders and
spotlights and spray cans. The locals have rang the gardai but by
the time they arrive the work has been carried out and there is no
sign of the painters.
