Not quite, but true enough--and it's on film, go watch "Rattle & Hum".
When U2 played a free concert in Justin Herman Plaza here in San
Francisco, Bono spray-painted the big ugly fountain in the plaza...Yeah,
the "rock and roll stops the traffic" bit. Given the general public
dislike for the fountain--one local columnist said it looked like
something pooped out by a giant dog with square intestines--most folks
thought Bono's stunt rather improved the fountain, but Bono did, in fact,
get busted by the SFPD, though the charges were dropped soon after. Pity;
the penalty would have been a fine and possibly some sort of public
service, usually scrubbing the city buses and streetcars. My friends and
I were all pulling for a conviction and the requisite bus-scrubbing, since
the fleet is d-i-r-t-y, and needs all the help it can get!

By the way, the "rock and roll stops the traffic" line no doubt refers to
the fact that the concert tangled up traffic on the Embarcadero
Freeway, which, at the time (1987) ran just alongside the plaza on the
waterfront. It was a big, ugly double-decker freeway--which was
subsquently damaged beyond repair in the 1989 earthquake, and has now been
pulled down. Which goes to show that rock and roll may _stop_ the
traffic, at least momentarily, but a good-sized earthquake has a much more
permanent effect.... ;-)
