Another angle at what may have prompted the 'joy' theme.
What's interesting is that alot of people in the 'electronic' camp who
shrug at pop/rock point to that genre's consistently 'depressing' themes
which in part is true. Alot of songs basically have sad themes, even
the often used love themes involve love and despair.
Even Depeche Mode's Gahan is steering clear from some of their darkest
tracks and ignoring that ultra dark album which actually propelled them
to mass popularity.

Dark compelling is out, fun and parties are in, people want to have a
good time, after all music is escapism/entertainment so why the downer
negativitism themes.

Only thing is the happy angle won't be that compelling, kind of like one
big happy singalong but then it's over.
But what's he gonna sing about, how cool it is to be in a rock band, how
great it is to watch your kids grow up, having one too many
brewskies,...

If you look at the Joshua Tree, every song including the b-sides has a
sad negative theme, check out Unforgettable fire, more of the same yet
alot of those songs are powerful and timeless since they say something
compelling and are delivered that same way.
