songs of JOY

When I think of pure joy from a U2 song, I think of Streets (live). And
that's not lyrically simple, or purely joyous for that matter -- and yet
look how it makes people feel. I think Pride, like exultation in the
face of defeat, that's true joy. I think I Will Follow, the joy of
devotion to someone else. Gloria, Rejoice, 40, obvious joy in God. New
Year's Day, the joy of the fight. Even Better Than the Real Thing,
Desire -- joy in sex! Zoo Station and especially Zooropa have the joy
of setting off into the unknown. And there's even joy in gambling --
Lady With the Spinning Head.

U2 have been writing about joy all along... if they make an album of joy
up to the standards of these songs, they will be making their best album
ever.
