dave, i'm glad to say i don't think anyone is arguing over it. as i'm
in belfast, i'm the last to want to start some silly debate over what
they are yet i pretty much started this thread.
why? not because it matters to me or i hope anyone on WIRE if U2 are
Protestant, Catholic, Muslim, Jewish or Klingon.
why then? well, i didnt actually know just what a mix of backgrounds
the lads had until people responded to my post, and i hope it's also
helped remind people that between these two islands in the corner of
Europe there's been quite a lot of ethnic mixing. Thus all the
confusion over whether being irish means catholic, or protestant means
british, or if being an irish band has to mean they all love the IRA
or hate the English.
if this helps educate WIRE a bit more on U2s background and the wide
range of backgrounds anyone calling themself 'Irish' can have, maybe
we can have less ignorance and more understanding on WIRE about how to
discuss U2 as 'Irish'.
And hence us Irish members on WIRE wont have to correct future posts
mistaking Irish to mean Anglophobe/republican/bogtrotting Paddy etc
etc ;-)
