Roughly translated: Bosom buddy. A more elegant translation might read
"lifelong, dearest friend".

Van Diemen was one of the Dutch explorers who first mapped the continent
of Australia...I believe that it's also a historical name for what is now
Tasmania, which served as a penal colony for Britain in the colonial era.
Problem is, the subject of the song--John Boyle O'Reilly--seems to have
never been held in Tasmania, but rather spent his sentence in the penal
colony at Freemantle, just south of Perth. O'Reilly was a member of the
IRB (aka the Fenian Brotherhood), who was sentenced to death, commuted
to lifelong imprisonment and transportation to Western Australia. He was
convicted as a "felony treason" prisoner, for recruiting Irish members of
the British military into the IRB, in preparation for an eventual rising.
(Which is to say: Don't believe everything you read in album liner
notes!) He managed to escape from Freemantle, and wound up living in
Boston, where he became a newspaperman and a respected leader in the Irish
community, as well as a leader in the Fenian movement in America. His
knowledge of the Freemantle penal colony was useful in planning a rescue
expedition to free other Fenian prisoners who were still held there.

As far as I know, the PopMart sampler was a promo-only release, and it
seems to have been sent to radio stations and record shops, etc. I found
a copy for $20 at a record collector's fair some months ago, which is
admittedly a good price for it...As for being printed in Canada, I've seen
a fair number of 'domestic' vinyl releases (albums and 12" singles) that
have been printed/manufactured in Canada or Europe, which I've always
assumed was because of the US labels' turn away from vinyl releases. It
probably makes more economic sense to crank out all of your vinyl in one
shot, and ship 'em all from there, than to manufacture separate, smaller
runs in each country.
