Below is the most recent album and single chart news that I could
find on-line. Some charts have not been updated as of this writing. Those
charts have a * for this week. My source for the Irish album charts
hasn't been updated in some time, so there are three * representing
the last few weeks.

Recent certification news is also included here.

TidBits:

1) "The Sweetest Thing" has enjoyed 3 weeks in the U.S.
Modern Rock charts. Based on sales play alone, it has
also reached #63 in the Hot 100. This position is
higher than or close to many of U2's other hits, which
were released as singles such as "Last Night
on Earth", "Stay", "When Love Comes to Town"
and "The Fly" and "All I Want Is You", all of which
charted at #57 or lower. It should be noted though that
due to a formatting change in the U.S. Hot 100,
it may not be fair to compare the chart success of
older songs with newer releases.

2) "The Best Of + B-Sides" has been certified as
PLATINUM in the U.S. "The Best Of" has
been certified as GOLD. Combined, this means
that U2's "Best Of" has sold 1.5 million copies in the .
U.S. The last SoundScan figures I've seen stated that
"POP" only sold 1.4 million copies in the U.S.
Hmmm...

3) "The Best Of + B-Sides" has been certified as
TRIPLE PLATINUM in Canada (300,000 copies
sold). "The Best Of" has been certified as PLATINUM
(100,000 copies sold). Combined, this means
that U2's "Best Of" has sold 400,000 copies in Canada.
The last SoundScan figures I've seen stated that
"POP" only sold 380,000 million copies in Canada.
Hmmm (part 2)...

4) The on-line U.K. music page indicated that George
Michael and U2 are the "big holiday sellers" this year
in Europe. Michael's "Best Of" is in the top 10 in
fourteen European territories. U2's "Best Of" is #1 in
eight territories (!) and in the top 10 in four others (a total
of 15 European territories were examined).

5) In Australia, both "The Best Of" and "The Sweetest
Thing" *rose* on the charts this week! Unfortunately,
I have not seen any certification news for Australia.

Lastly (Prarit, don't put this part in your U2News),
I will be going to Chicago for the holiday and will
be without a computer (gasp). So it will be a few
weeks before more chart news is reported (at least
by me).

Many of you have kindly provided me chart news
for other countries. Thank you. However, due to time
limitations I only post news from 5 countries (as I feel
that these countries are a "fair" representation of
WIRE and U2Lemon members). If anyone has
any chart/sales information, please post it as
I'm sure many others are interested in U2's success
in other parts of the world. Also, if any of you
come across other certifications, please let me know.

Have a great holiday everyone!

Ciao,

John
